How to Use the Big Green® Carpet Cleaners

Step 1: Prepare Your Carpet For Deep Cleaning

Before using the carpet cleaner rental machine, vacuum the carpeted area thoroughly. If there are any old or dark carpet stains, spray them with a Rug Doctor® or BISSELL® pretreat formula.

Step 2: Prepare The Carpet Cleaner Rental Machine

Remove the top dirty water tank to reveal the bottom clean water tank. Fill the clean water tank with two capfuls of Rug Doctor ® or BISSELL® cleaning formula and hot tap water. Place both tanks back onto the machine.

Step 3: Deep Clean Carpet

Plug the carpet cleaner rental machine into an outlet and turn on. While pressing the trigger, slowly make one forward and backward pass with the carpet deep cleaner. Release the trigger and do another forward and backward pass. Repeat until the solution being pulled up looks clean. Continue this process around your room until the entire room has been cleaned. The flow indicator will stop spinning when it’s time to empty the dirty water and refill the clean water tank.

How to Clean Upholstery & Carpet

Step 1: Check Fabrics and Prepare the Area

Check the manufacturers tag for cleaning instructions. If there is a W or W/S on the tag it means you can use water for cleaning and it is safe to use the upholstery tool. If it is coded S or X, do not use the tool and contact the manufacturer for cleaning instructions. Always test the cleaning solution and tool in an inconspicuous spot or hidden area and allow it to dry before proceeding. If upholstery color is affected, do not use the tool. Thoroughly vacuum the upholstery or stairs before cleaning.

Step 2: Prepare The Carpet Cleaner Rental Machine

Remove the top dirty water tank to reveal the bottom clean water tank. Fill the clean water tank with two capfuls of Rug Doctor® or BISSELL® cleaning formula and hot tap water. Place both tanks back onto the machine. Attach the accessory hose by inserting the small solution hose into the open hole above the tank, turn clockwise to lock. Attach the larger hose to the top tank by lifing the cap, insert hose end into hole and turn clockwise until locked into place.

Step 3: Deep Clean Your Upholstery or Stairs

Press the red trigger to spray cleaning solution onto the area to be cleaned, then slowly move the tool back and forth to suction dirty water.

How to Clean Machine & Tools Before Returning

Be kind and please return the machine and accessories back in the condition that you would want for your next cleaning job. Unplug the machine and:

  • Empty and rinse both the dirty and clean water tanks, removing all dirt and debris.
  • Remove all string, pet hair, debris, and dirt from the foot brush roller.
  • Wipe down the brush roller, wheels, and bottom of the machine with a damp cloth.
  • Wipe off all dirt and debris from the outside of the unit.
  • If you rented and used the upholstery tool, rinse the tool head, remove dirt and debris and wipe it down.

To avoid a $40 cleaning fee, the rental machine MUST be returned in a clean, rentable condition.

Troubleshooting

Issue:Clean Water Tank is empty or low
How to Fix:Fill Clean Water Tank with water and solution.

Issue:Tanks may not be seated completely
How to Fix:Remove and reset both tanks making sure they are fully seated.

Issue:Pump may have lost prime
How to Fix:Turn power OFF, then back ON. Wait one minute, then press trigger.

Issue:Debris filter clogged
How to Fix:Remove both tanks and carefully remove any debris from the filter area.

Issue:Water release valve clogged
How to Fix:Hold the Clean Water Tank over sink and check the valve on the bottom by pressing the center of the red circle to be sure nothing is clogging it and it moves freely.

Issue:Tanks may not be seated properly
How to Fix:Remove and reset both tanks making sure they are fully seated and fit snuggly on machine.

Issue:Clean Water Tank is empty or low
How to Fix:Fill Clean Water Tank with water and solution.

Issue:Dirty Water Tank is full
How to Fix:Remove and empty Dirty Water tank.

Issue:Red float "door" closed as a result of bumping an object or moving machine back and forth too quickly
How to Fix:Turn machine OFF, allowing red float door to release into the open position. Turn machine ON to continue cleaning. Be sure your forward and backward strokes are completed at a slower pace.

Issue:Front nozzle clogged
How to Fix:Turn the machine OFF, use finger to remove any debris from the slot on bottom at front of machine.

Issue:Debris filter clogged
How to Fix:Remove both tanks and carefully remove any debris from the filter area.

Issue:Machine is in the upright position
How to Fix:The brush only rotates when the handle is reclined.

Issue:Tripped circuit breaker
How to Fix:Turn the machine OFF and unplug from outlet. Lay the machine on it's side and check to see if a foreign object is caught in the Brush Roll. Remove object. Plug machine in to reset circuit breaker.

Issue:Broken belt
How to Fix:Contact customer service for assistance, machine will need to be returned to rental store and exchanged for another one.

Issue:Machine not plugged in
How to Fix:Make sure the machine is plugged into a working outlet and that you hear a loud vacuum noise when the machine is turned on.

Issue:Machine circuit needs to “reset”
How to Fix:Unplug the machine from the power source, wait 30 seconds, plug in and try to turn on. Call customer service if the machine still won’t start.

Issue:Not enough power
How to Fix:There is a chance that the outlet you are trying to use is not a high enough amp rating. Try plugging the machine into a different outlet that is a GFCI plug such as one in the kitchen or bathroom. The machine needs to be plugged directly into an outlet and cannot be used with an extension cord.

Issue:Water not flowing through pump
How to Fix:Always hold down the spray trigger for one full minute to help get the water flowing through the pump and out the spray tips.

Issue:Upholstery tool is not correctly attached to machine
How to Fix:Disconnect and reconnect the hoses to the top of the machine. Be sure both are securely locked into place.
