This week we have a guest blog post from Odile Harbaugh, Brand Manager at Rug Doctor. Odile is the mother to three beautiful kids, and she uses her experience and kid mess know-how to put Rug Doctor products to the test at home. Her recent potty training experience – a.k.a. potty training fail – resulted in a pretty interesting tip to share with our readers.

We talk a lot about pet accidents on the carpet, but what about baby accidents? I mean urine is urine, right? I’m in the process of potty training my 2-year-old and let me tell you, we’ve had our fair share of accidents… on the carpet, no less!

Luckily, there’s a fantastic Rug Doctor product called Pure Power Urine Eliminator – and while it’s generally used for cleaning pet accidents on carpet and soft surfaces, most people don’t know it works just as well on “human” accidents. That’s because the active enzymes in the formula literally eat away biological stains like urine, sweat, vomit, and more. (More on vomit accidents later.) This product is my secret weapon! Here’s how I use it:

Once you’ve discovered your child has had an accident, don’t wait! Act as quickly as possible, as dried urine can sometimes have a bleaching effect on carpets. First blot away any excess liquid, and then spray the stain well with Pure Power Urine Eliminator. Place some damp paper towels on top of the affected area, and leave it alone for up to 24-hours, ideally. This is important, because the enzymes need time to get down to business and eat away the biological stain.

I actually spray some Urine Eliminator on the soiled clothes too before throwing them in the wash!

But wait! There’s more! Remember my vomit comment above? On the few occasions when my children have gotten sick and couldn’t get to the bathroom, Urine Eliminator has come to the rescue, as well. As I mentioned before, the formula in Urine Eliminator features enzymes that target odors and stains from all biological stains. So it’s perfect to clean vomit from carpet or any soft surface in the home.

Just follow the same procedure as above; remove excess liquids or solids, spray the area with Urine Eliminator, and cover with a damp paper towel.

If the vomit is particularly gross after 24 hours, I use my Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner (my other secret weapon!) and deep clean the affected area of the carpet or furniture. It works like magic, leaving the carpet clean and smelling good again.
